Microsoft Amalga to spice up Health Enterprise Systems

Month Date, 2008: The world’s largest software company has announced the Amalga family of enterprise-class health information system solutions.

Microsoft has revealed the new name and look for the product formerly known as Azyxxi that will be able to capture, consolidate, store and enable quick access to sensitive health information, no matter how diverse the current IT setup may be. The Amalga family is going to be demonstrated for the first time at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society 2008 convention at the end of the month.

“One of the healthcare enterprise’s biggest issues is that providers and executives can’t access patient information when, where and how they need it,” said Steve Shihadeh, general manager for Microsoft’s Health Solutions Group.

The Amalga product family will form part of Microsft’s new Unified Intelligence Systems portfolio that is directly targeting hospital enterprises who want to access data sitting in isolated financial, administrative and clinical systems. According to Shihadeh, the name ‘Amalga’ is based on the Latin word ‘amalgama,’ meaning to bring together different elements.

Prior to the public demonstration, Microsoft has been busy with its early adopter program, pushing out parts of its Amalga family to a limited group of enterprises ahead of release.

“We are excited that we are a part of this early adopter program,” said Ed Martinez, chief information officer at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute. “Amalga is the backbone of our Total Cancer Care initiative. It provides instant access to the information, and allows researchers to make and prove their hypotheses within minutes instead of months.”
