Apple Unveils new iMac, iWork and iLife

August 8, 2007: Apple has pulled the cloak off a list of long-awaited product updates including an entire new iMac line that may finally silence critics of Apple’s ‘green’ stand-point.

After copping flak from non-profits like Greenpeace for a lack of environmental initiatives, Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO talked up the iMac’s new ‘greener’ features. “Our new design features the innovative use of materials including professional-grade aluminium and glass, that are highly recyclable.

The iMac line features both a 20 and 24-inch widescreen display, Intel Core 2 Duo processes running up to 2.8 GHz with 4MB of shared L2 caches and up to 4GB of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory, an aluminium enclosure, glossy widescreen and an ‘ultra-thin’ aluminium Apple Keyboard. Apple says the new iMac will sell at a recommended retail price that’s vastly cheaper than their previous model at A$1,698 for the 20-inch and 2,599 for the 24-inch.

To coincide with iMac release, Apple also unveiled a new spreadsheet application called ‘Numbers,’ incorporated into their iWork ’08 upgrade to Pages and Keynote word processing and presentation applications. Apple says the Numbers application offers a new approach for organising information, creating calculations and analysing results on spreadsheets.

Meanwhile Apple also introduced the new iLife ’08 in what it says is the ‘most significant upgrade ever’ to their digital lifestyle applications. A new version of iPhoto will be released alongside iMovie, the .Mac Web Gallery and GarageBand.

Taking a swing at the PC market, Jobs says, “Apple has take iLife ’08 to a new level that is years ahead of anything available for the PC. We think iLife ’08 gives Mac users even more reasons to love their Macs, and PC users even more reason to switch.
