Yahoo counters Gmail with improved email service

Yahoo has delivered on a promise it made more than a month ago to significantly increase the amount of storage space available to users of both its free and subscription-based email services.

Aware of the threat posed by Google's soon to be introduced Gmail service, which will offer users 1GB of storage capacity for free, Yahoo has upped the storage capacity available to its free users from 4MB to 100MB, while paying customers will have "virtually unlimited storage" of 2GB.

Additionally, Yahoo has opened up more than 50 million Yahoo ID's that have been lying unused for a long time, to give users the opportunity to choose a more user friendly email address.

The move by Yahoo pre-empts the launch of Gmail, which is still undergoing beta testing. While the generous 1GB of free storage offer has been well received, Google has been on the end of some criticism over its plan to scan the contents of messages sent over Gmail in order to send targeted advertising.
