In 2015, there were nearly 407,000 attempted ransomware infections and over $US325 million extorted from victims with many experts seeing it as the security issue of 2016.

Organsations habitually over-retain information, especially unstructured electronic information, for many reasons. However, many organisations simply have not addressed what to do with this data so fall back on relying on individual employees to decide what should be kept and for how long and what should be disposed of.

The International Data Corporation (IDC) end-user study, CloudView 2016, has found that 67% of all Australian organisations surveyed are embracing cloud, using public or private cloud for more than one or two small applications or workloads yet only 13% of the respondents believed that they have an "optimised" cloud strategy.
