Maxell Upgrades DDS Tape Capacity

Maxell Upgrades DDS Tape Capacity

May 2, 2007: Data storage media producer Maxell has rolled out the sixth-generation of its DDS media, the DAT 160, promising not only increased capacity but new and improved security and compliance features.

Maxell says its new kit supports up to 160GB of compressed data with transfer rates edging up to 49.3GB/h. The company has blown out capacity by increasing the width of the tape and re-engineering cartridge design, however, it has at the same time managed to retain the overall benefits of the compact DDS technology.

Maxell is also boasting the addition of WORM (Write Once, Read Many) capabilities, a first for DDS gear. The technology enables secure backup and storage of critical data for legal and regulatory compliance

With the re-engineering, backwards compatibility would normally be thrown into question. Maxell claims though, that the DAT 160 is backwards compatible with DAT 72 and DDS-4, enabling SMBs to upgrade without risking their current archives or throwing away previous investment in DDS gear.

“The development of DAT 160 and Maxell’s immediate product launch into the market is a prime example of our focused commitment and leadership role within the storage media industry,” said Steven Pofcher, Senior Marketing Manager at Maxell. “We are providing the highest quality data storage media and services that our customers can trust when backing up their business-critical information.”
