Imation Boasts Better Backup for SMBs

April 17, 2007: Imation has just launched its latest RDX removable hard disk storage system, claiming its new kit provides easy and reliable backup, data security and expandable storage by combining features from both tape and hard disk backup.

Aimed at small to medium businesses (SMBs) and bundled with EMC Retrospect data protection software, RDX was originally developed by ProStor Systems, and is as of last year being licensed by Imation.

The system is made up of cartridges sporting 2.5-inch hard disk drives which are protected against both shock and electrostatic discharge. An RDX cartridge backs up like a traditional tape cartridge, but with the high performance and low-failure rate advantages of disk-to-disk storage. Cartridges are available in 40, 80, 120 and 160GB capacities and according to Imation can withstand a fall of one meter.

“The growth of corporate digital assets and issues such as compliance and disaster recovery have expanded our SMB customers' storage requirements to new heights, making the need for highly reliable data protection even more critical," said James Milligan, general manager, Commercial/OEM Division, Imation. “[The RDX is] a reliable, flexible and expandable solution to meet those needs."

Depending on capacity, the RDX Removable Hard Disk Storage System is priced from US$299 to US$499 and is available in both USB and SATA flavours.
