Dell Deploys 1st Terabyte PC

March 20, 2007: Dell has made history by offering the first personal computer with one terabyte of storage space.

Dells says it is targeting PC users requiring high storage space for digital media and graphics. Such high storage capacity particularly assists with high-definition video and gamine.

The machines are equipped with the Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Deskstar 7K100 drive. Spinning at 7,200 rpm the drive uses perpendicular recording, read access time of 8.5msecs, a cache of 38 MB and five platters.

Neil Hand, vice president for Dell, says it’s a personal capacity previously only available to large corporations. “With this spectacular advancement in hard drives and the engineering in our systems, we’re now able to bring it to consumers,” he says.

Dell’s Alienware gaming PCs will be the first machines to offer the terabyte storage capacity.
