Samsung Announces 64GB Notebook SSD

March 29, 2007: After heralding the release of its first 32GB solid state disk (SSD) late last year, Samsung has now announced that it will soon make a 1.8” 64GB version available.

The new flash-SSD is based on eight gigabit single-level-cell (SLC) NAND technology that the company claims can provide significantly higher performance over conventional SSDs.

Samsung says that the read and write performance of the new SLC flash-SSD drive has been increased by 20 percent and 60 percent respectively over the 32GB flash-SSD introduced last year.

The company is touting the drives as drop-in replacements for hard disks, significantly improving the performance and cutting performance in notebooks. Aside from mobile applications Samsung has also proposed 100GB server versions of the SSD, however, further details on this development are yet to be released.

Samsung says that the SSD market is expected to reach US$200 million in 2007, and increase to a spectacular US$6.8 billion by 2010 – a compound annual growth rate of over 200 percent. It plans to start mass production of the 1.8" 64GB flash-SSD in the second quarter of this year.
