EMC Takes On Efficiency In Data Centres

December 7, 2006: EMC has launched a variety of services to help customers reduce power and cooling costs as well as overall energy consumption in data centres.

Some industry analysts estimate that energy costs already represent more then 10 percent of the standard enterprise are IT budget. Of growing concern to CIOs and IT administrators is the fact that this figure is expected to rise rapidly in the years ahead.

EMC says its Energy Efficiency Services will help customers manage the rising costs of energy while also working to reduce their environmental footprint.

The services are undertaken by EMC professionals who assess an organisation’s data centre and then plan, design and implement change to better manage the centre’s power efficiency. EMC’s team can also recommend and design energy efficient storage strategies such as virtualisation and tiered storage.

Charles King, principal analyst, Pund-IT Research says the EMC services can assist organisations in achieving measurable cost reductions across their IT infrastructure. King believes that too often enterprises seek IT vendors that can deliver clear return on investment, but “fail to account for long-term energy consumption and the associated impact on total cost of ownership.”

Alongside these services is the EMC Power Calculator, a no-cost tool utilising customer configured specifications to project energy consumption and cooling requirements. EMC says the tool is far more accurate than a generic data sheet and allows for planning before implementation for energy conscious customers.
