Adaptec's Entry-Level HostRaid Controller

June 5th, 2006: Two sub AU$600 Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) cards launched into Australia and aimed at the SME show the growth in requirement for intelligent storage devices.

Adaptec's SAS 44300 and 58300 are aimed, according to Adaptec, at people looking to store email, databases or video. To support this broad spectrum, the controllers - offer three RAID levels: 1, 0 and 10.

Importantly to the client requiring increased storage on a budget, the controller cards enable the use of both SATA (Serial ATA) or SAS drives. The 58300 card is an eight-port controller with two x4 external SFF-8088 mini SAS connectors featuring Adaptec HostRAID - an integrated RAID technology. The Adaptec 58300 supports up to eight direct-attached drives and up to 128 devices using expander technology. The card offers RAID levels 0, 1, and 10 as well as 48-bit LBA support for the use of disk drives exceeding 137GB in capacity. The Adaptec 58300 supports Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, and Linux.

The 58300 supports up to eight direct-attached drives and up to 128 devices using expander technology. There is also support for 48-bit LBA support for of disk drives exceeding 137Gb. There is support for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, and Linux.

The 443000, aimed at the desktop user, is a four-port controller with 1x4 internal SFF-8484 connector. As with the 58300 drives, it features HostRAID. It also supports up to eight direct attached drives and up to 128 devices using expander technology pluis support for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, and Linux.
