June 15th, 2006: Doubling tape capacity via 'Capacity On Demand' enables small businesses to scale as budgets allow.

'C.O.D.' is acronym prefers for on-demand electronic upgrade to the VXA-172 Packet Drive tape drive and VXA-172 PacketLoader 1x10 autoloader. The company is claiming a first in for C.O.D. as a upgrade path for SMBs to increase their data back-up capacity in-line with requirements and budget.

The upgrades are available via resellers for $A654.50 including GST for a drive upgrade and $A1098.90 including GST for the PacketLoader upgrade. With this simple, three-step electronic C.O.D. upgrade, customers can almost double the capacity of their VXA-172 Packet Drive, from 172 to 320 gigabytes. The VXA-172 PacketLoader can be upgraded from 1.7 to 3.2 terabytes. You also get a 320GB tape cartridge thrown in.

"Unlike tape devices of the past, such as DDS/DAT and DLT tape that have fixed capacity limits resulting in built-in obsolescence, Exabyte's VXA-172 products were engineered to grow as business data grows," said Tom Ward, Exabyte president and CEO. "The small to midsized business typically purchases a server with more than 100 gigabytes of disk space, so we took into account the need to match the server to the storage in terms of initial investment and future capacity growth. The "pay as you grow" architecture of our VXA products is the only one that makes sense for this market segment."
