Hybrid Flash Hard Drive On The Way

Hybrid Flash Hard Drive On The Way

May 18, 2006: Samsung will reportedly unveil its new prototype laptop flash memory / magnetic disk hard drive next week.

The company says that the hybrid will increase laptop system performance as frequently used data can be read off the flash instead of the drive platters, a feature that will also increase booth speed.

Battery life will also be extended between eight and ten percent according to Samsung, as data will be stored in the flash buffer until it is full and then written to the disk. This means that the drive will typically only have to spin up every 10 or 20 minutes for a few seconds.

Prototypes with 128Mb and 256Mb of flash memory will be on display at Microsoft's Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) in Seattle this month.

Samsung is expected to start shipping the hybrid in January 2007.
