HP Expands SMB Market Presence

May 25, 2006: HP has broadened its presence in the SMB storage market with the introduction of three storage arrays and data protection software.

With this new set of storage products – a virtual library system, a tape library and software for HP ProLiant servers, HP has set its sight on small businesses and remote or branch offices in large enterprises.

According to the company, the new HP StorageWorks Virtual Library System 1002i (VLS1002i) will store as much as 1.5 TB of uncompressed data or twice that amount (3 TB) of compressed data. The 1.5TB VLS1002i with Data Protector Express software is priced at US$6,100.

The HP StorageWorks 4U (7”) high MSL4048 tape library is designed for multi-site businesses that do not have dedicated IT support. It claims to store as much as 19.2 TB of data. The ML4048 starts its price at US$1,300.

Both the VLS1002i and the MSL4048 promise to ship with Web-based management capability. Also in the offing is the HP ProLiant Data Protection Storage Server (DPSS). This server based on Microsoft's System Center Data Protection Manager software claims to enable DPSS replicas and systems back up along with an automated disaster recovery option.
