Seagate Releases 750Gb Beast

April 26th, 2006: Seagate has begun shipping its new line of 3.5-inch Barracuda hard drives with capacities hitting a massive 750Gb.

Named the Barracuda 7200.10, the abyssal drive makes use of the company’s new perpendicular recording technology and marks a 50 percent increase in size over its previous 500Gb record holder, and the biggest, fastest capacity jump in the 50-year history of the hard drive.

Perpendicular recording technology enables data to be arranged in vertical columns on drive platters, allowing more information to be stored in less space compared to a traditional hard drive.

Analysts say that the cavernous Barracuda will be able to store around 375 hours of standard-definition television programming, about 75 hours of high-definition video, or more than 10,000 music CDs in MP3 format.

The drive has been released a month ahead of schedule due and will have an RRP of U.S.$559 for external models.
