ADIC Rocks De-Duplication

ADIC Rocks De-Duplication

March 16, 2006: In a $63 million deal announced on Tuesday, Advanced Digital Information Corp (ADIC) has acquired Australian startup Rocksoft and its de-duplication technology.

The acquisition of the Adelaide-based Rocksoft sees ADIC take another step away from its core tape business towards the disk-based solutions it has been increasing emphasis on in recent years.

De-duping is a way of reducing the bandwidth required to store and transmit data. It compresses data that appears in more than one place and is commonly used in virtual tape libraries (VTL).

Corporate marketing director for ADIC Steve Whitner says Rocksoft's technology is likely to be implemented in all of ADIC's disk products, with the Pathlight VTL “a perfect place to put this.”

Whitner says that Rocksofts architecture heavily influenced the acquisition decision as it was developed with a wide range of vendors in mind in the hope of scoring OEM deals. This gives ADIC the ability to license Rocksoft’s technology in markets it doesn't plan to enter, such as WAFS and WAN optimization.

ADIC has not yet announced any specific integration details, however it expects to be shipping Rocksoft’s technology in its products by the end of the year.
