More on Intel’s Storage Community

February 5, 2006: With a view to assisting IT departments find storage information and solutions, Intel has launched what it calls an online repository of product and service information. Intel? Storage? To get the skinny, IDM spoke to Intel’s Asia-Pacific product line manager for networking and storage, Steve Chatham.

When Intel isn’t necessarily a name that springs straight to mind. How can Intel make itself more visible in the market?
IT managers have looked to Intel to lead key storage technology developments. Intel currently offers the most complete line of leading-edge storage technology products including: Intel Architecture and Intel XScale technology based processors for SAN, NAS and DAS systems, optical and LAN connectivity products, bridges, motherboards and host adapters for RAID & iSCSI to build world class storage systems to meet the ever increasing data needs.

What does Intel envisage the ISC becoming?
ISC is a constantly expanding resource and new members are being added on a daily basis. The charter is expected to remain unchanged.

What was its motivation to establish the ISC in the first place?
Intel established ISC after identifying the need for a community of storage building block and solution providers, platform integrators and application developers dedicated to solving IT challenges and meeting the demand for affordable, reliable and easy-to-manage storage solutions. The ISC charter is to build a world-class solution-centred ecosystem program made up of software, hardware and third-party tool developers dedicated to delivering innovative, modular storage solutions with reduced time-to-market and lower total cost of ownership.

So Intel is planning on making itself a more prominent player in the storage industry?
Yes. By delivering building blocks that improve platform efficiency and enable OEMs to innovate and differentiate at higher levels of functionality, Intel expects to lead the storage industry and enable new markets with standards-based solutions.

Will the ISC be including hardware comparisons or independent analysis of each vendor’s products and their use, or will it remain a listing?
The ISC Solutions Directory contains a broad range of storage components and solutions and is designed as an easy-to-use product or technology locator.  It is up to ISC members to independently pursue reviews, comparisons or analysis of their products.
