NetApp Offers Complete Disk Backup Service

February 9, 2006: Network Appliance (NetApp) has launched new technology and services to help manage and protect enterprise data without making any crucial changes to infrastructure or business processes.

The first part of the release is NetApp’s NearStore Virtual Tape Library (VTL). An enterprise-class storage appliance, the NearStore emulates physical tape libraries and stores large capacities of backup data on disk before automatically copying it to physical tape. NetApp claim that the NearStore is “ideal for customers who want greater performance and simpler data management from their existing tape environments.”

The second part of the announcement comes from NetApp Global Services (NGS) which has launched three services to support the NearStore technology. Namely the VLT Design and Implementation Service, Disaster Recovery Design and Implementation Service and the Backup and Recovery Design and Implementation Service.

“…today’s announcement provides a broad range of disk-to-disk backup and security solutions that simplify data backup procedures, improve recoverability, and lower backup infrastructure expenses.” says Simon Green, Area Director, South Asia. “Our entire disk-to-disk backup family helps solve our customers' most pressing needs: managing huge and growing data volumes, protecting that data from a variety of threats and risks, and preserving uptime.”

Green added that today’s announcements “…offer more choice and flexibility to our customers, and bring credibility to the emerging VTL space.  The net effects are simpler management and lower outlay costs--as well as higher data availability.”

All products and services are available now from NetApp.
