Symantec Moves On Data Centre Management

February 9, 2006: Symantec has whipped out the chequebook again to purchase data centre change and configuration management software provider Relicore.

Relicore develops Clarity, the industry's only configuration management solution capable of automatically discovering, mapping, and tracking changes to application and server components in real time. This ability can, according to Relicore, be extremely helpful in reducing server downtime by reducing manual collecting and maintaining asset inventories.

The acquisition adds another important chuck to Symantec’s suite of products aimed data centre security, management and compliance.

"The application and server environment in most enterprises is growing and changing so fast, it has become dizzyingly complex," says Kris Hagerman, senior vice president of the Server and Storage Management Group, Symantec. "Meanwhile, due to 24x7 performance demands, cost pressure, and internal and external compliance requirements, it has never been more important for IT organizations to understand what is in their data centres - and control it. The combination of Relicore's unique, real-time configuration management capability with Symantec's existing server management and storage management capabilities will allow IT managers to fully understand their application and server environment, and actively manage it."

Reliance also say that Clarity helps to efficiently manage compliance by discovering and mapping the resources associated with financial reporting systems, and ensuring compliance policies are continuously enforced.

Symantec has also recently purchased compliance specialist Bindview, and instant messaging security software developer IM Logic. The deal with Relicore is expected to be finalised in mid-February 2006.
