Teradata Releases Data Warehouse 8.1

December 22, 2005: Teradata is shipping the latest version of its data warehousing software suite. It’s been two years since the last version hit the market in 2003, now Warehouse 8.1 is out and strutting around showing off its apparent enhancements to performance, usability and security.

The software suite offers a single repository for all business data, and achieves increases in performance by using parallel database technology. Teradata say this makes it a “single platform updated in near-real time” giving administrators the ability to answer questions from business units promptly, consistently and accurately.

“Teradata’s enterprise intelligence delivers strategic analysis to the back-office decision-makers while supporting operational intelligence to the front-line users for better, faster decision-making,” says Julian Beavis, vice president Australia and New Zealand, Teradata. “To enable enterprise intelligence, the database must support the ‘mixed workload’ of both batch and continuous data feeds while the deep analytical queries are being processed along side the quick, service-level operational queries.”

Teradata also claim that the new software makes it easier to manage data warehouses by monitoring query activity in real time. Real time monitoring is achieved by with an on-screen dashboard which also provides tools for administrators to manage the system directly, rapidly respond to queries, and increase security.

"Security and privacy are top-of-mind issues for executives due to the impact on revenue and company reputation," says Scott Gnau, vice president and general manager of Teradata research and development. "For security reasons, we are seeing many new prospects moving towards centralising their data so it can be more tightly and easily managed.”

Teradata also plans to bring the SUSE Linux operating system to enterprise data warehouses in early 2006.
