Exabyte squeeze more capacity into tape

Oct 6, 2005: Exabyte has released the third generation of its VXA Packet tape drive, the VXA-320. Taking aim at the small to medium business user who wants big capacity and automation but low price, the VXA-320 increases capacity to 320 GB per cartridge with transfer rates of 24Mb/sec compressed.

The larger capacity will help solve all those swapping problems that crop up when using older 36 GB or smaller tapes. "Our OEM partners tell us that the majority of servers sold today ship with well above 100 GB of hard disk capacity," said Tom Ward, president and ceo of Exabyte. "This presents a dilemma for end users trying to back up servers with DDS or DAT drives with only 20 GB or 36 GB tapes. Not only is this not practical, but it undermines the safety of their data protection strategy. With 160 GB of native capacity, VXA-320 solves this 'capacity gap' problem."

Coupled with their new drive, Exabyte have also released the VXA-320 PacketLoader 1x10. This is, the company says, a full-featured 1u autoloader with 10 cartridge slots offering up to 3.2 Tb of capacity and a bar code reader and Ethernet port for remote management.

The VXA-320 is compatible with previous generations of VXA, as well as all major backup software venodors. Ultra2, Wide and Scsi interfaces will be immediately available, with SAS and Firewire to follow in the second quarter of 2006.

The VXA-320 is available now.
