Intel focuses on healthcare technology

Jan 18, 2005: Intel has restructured its organisation to create five new business units that will concentrate on building technology that can be used to boost healthcare, and serve its worldwide distribution channel.

A Digital Health Group will be launched, led by Louis Burns, to develop products and explore business opportunities for Intel architecture products in healthcare research, diagnostics and productivity, as well as personal healthcare.

Intel is currently conducting research into where and why their technology would be useful inside hospitals and places that care for people.

Paul Otellini, the Intel president and COO, said: "Intel is putting the people and resources in place to sharpen our focus on development of platforms that meet the demands of our customers and provide innovative and exciting new technologies for the marketplace.

"The new organisation will help address growth opportunities by better anticipating and addressing market needs, speeding decisions making, and ensuring world-class operational excellence.

"Each operating unit has the autonomy to allocate computing and communications resources to be successful, making Intel's entire structure consistent with our platform products strategy."

The other new business units include The Mobility Group, which will develop platforms for notebook PC and handheld computing and communications devices. This is aimed at making the growing number of different mobile devices work together better, and making sure that the technology is easier to use.

The Digital Enterprise Group will develop computing and communications infrastructure platforms for end-to-end solutions in businesses.

The Digital Home Group will focus on consumers in the emerging digital home, with emphasis on living room applications and electronic devices.

The Channel Product Group will seek to expand Intel's success in global markets by combining existing groups into one organisation focused on developing and selling products to meet the requirements of local markets.
