Software AG moves its base to Australia

One of IBM's biggest rivals has moved its headquarters from the Asia Pacific to Australia in an attempt to grasp a stronger stranglehold on the Australian market.

Software AG is a leader in XML integration and mainframe modernisation and said that the need to optimise mainframes was the main reason for the current increase in the company's growth.

John O'Malley, who has been promoted to general manager of the Asia Pacific, from his former position of managing director of the Australian division, explained why Australia was chosen as a base. "Australia was chose to be Software AG's regional headquarters as it is currently our strongest market in the Asia Pacific region, with an established blue chip customer base.

"Some of our existing staff will now have regional roles and our Canberra-based support centre's role as the key provider of regional customer support is now formalised. We've expanded the workforce by 30 percent in the past six months and are looking to boost our professional services capability, possibly through acquisition."

As MIS managers commit to the mainframe for the longer term to run mission-critical enterprise systems, there is a growing need to improve the performance and life span of these systems by opening them up to e-business applications.

O'Malley added. "XML is also maturing into a mainstream technology and we have recently recruited extra XML specialists to support Asia Pacific customers. There's increasing evidence that an integrated enterprise using XML standard systems is a much more efficient and profitable organisation."

Software AG's customers include Colonial First State Investments, Australian Securities and Investments Commission, Nissan and the Inland Revenue Department of Hong Kong.
