Dell offers cheaper storage

Dell has decided to build SANs in house, so that they can provide it at a cheaper price to smaller and medium-sized businesses.

The new storage system will be sold cheaper than their current entry-level SAN, the Dell EMC CX300, which they brand at the moment as EMC products.

In addition, Dell will also deliver a low-cost Host Bus Adapter solution and an affordable switch solution so that they can offer a complete storage systems at their cheapest price.

George Weiss, vice president research director of enterprise servers and storage at Gartner said: "The obvious benefits are the economies of scale that Dell can bring to the manufacturing, integration and distribution of those systems."

For the time being though, he added that Dell will not be able to sell the high-end SANs without the help of EMC: "If you are talking about the high-end and complex SAN configurations, Dell will not be able to compete with its standards-based model, at least in the near future. Dell will still have to depend on its relationship with other vendors such as EMC."

Dell will be able to offer the new SANs for smaller businesses because of recent profits. The company aims to win market share against already established competitors by driving down prices and increasing the shipments of its own products.

Dell also plans to expand into the printer market too and aims to reach $60 billion over the next few years.
