Dell ranked no.2 in international server market

The end of the fiscal fourth quarter has seen a substantial boom in product shipments, revenue and operating profits for Dell.

Dell gained almost three points of global market share from one year ago - more than three points in servers - and nearly five share points in the US. The company surpassed industry growth rates in strategically important markets, which include China, France, Germany and Japan, with shipments in these countries increasing to a cumulative 39 per cent.

The quarterly net earnings of US$456 million attested to significant growth, in light of last year's $434 million; for investors this has meant that shares have gone from 16 cents to 17 cents over the last US fiscal year. Performance of Dell's consumer business has been cited as the reason for Dell's burgeoning market place value, with the $8.9 billion in revenue recorded in the most recent period coming as slightly unexpected and exceeding Dell's original profit forecast.

Dell now ranks number one in Microsoft and Linux OS-based server shipments in the US and number two internationally. Clusters of standards based servers on Windows and Linux are increasingly assuming favour over proprietary UNIX based platforms from supercomputing applications. Industry analysts Thomson Financial/First Call have shown that Dell accounts for 65 per cent of global market revenue for technical clusters, a high-end niche of the market that is developing rapidly, in spite of its newness.

Revenue from the sale of external storage devices increased 87 per cent year over year. Dell EMC systems for storage area networks gave Dell its most rapid fourth quarter growth sales. In the quarter alone, Dell sold 69 per cent more storage capacity than the previous year's quarter.

The local region proved to be a fertile one for Dell. Of all Dell's regional sales areas, the Asia Pacific and Japan reported the most noticeable growth, with a 42 per cent increase in general consumer shipments and a 45 per cent increase in server shipments. Dell claims that it is the third largest company in the region.
