IBM switches to new McData boxes

IBM customers can now get access to the full range of McData switches, including the mid-range 4500 model and the high-end 6140.

IBM's Global Services division, along with other aligned resellers, are now selling McData's Sphereon 4500 switch, announced six weeks ago (see story), as well as the director-class Intrepid 6140 switch, released early in October (see story).

The 4500 switch will be pitched as a "mid-market" product, with its major advantage claimed to be a competitive price/performance ratio. The 6140 model is more suited for environments where performance is more important than cost, with an industry-high 140 ports. Both switches support Fibre Channel, but not the new iSCSI networking protocol.
