Novell Acquires PlateSpin

February 27, 2008: Novell is making further inroads into the next-generation of data centres, announcing that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire PlateSpin and its workload management solutions.

PlateSpin specialises in the dynamic delivery of business critical services across both physical and virtual infrastructures, with a range of solutions to manage heterogeneous workloads spanning data, applications and operating systems on physical or virtual hosts.

The company says its solution improves the speed and quality of server consolidation, data centre relocation and disaster recovery. Together, Novell and PlateSpin will support mixed infrastructure environments with products covering complete workload lifecycle management and optimisation for Linux, UNIX and Windows.

With the virtualisation market exponentially expanding, the acquisition places Novell in a prime position to pull physical and virtual infrastructure together in a unique way.

“Over the next three years, heterogeneous virtualisation architectures will be the norm for most IT organisations,” says Stephen Elliot, research director, Enterprise Systems Management Software and ITMS at IDC.

“As such they must purchase data centre management solutions that offer an ongoing opportunity for lowering operational costs as well as integrating and managing VMs across both server and storage infrastructures for greater control and visibility between hardware and the virtual software tiers.”
