Hitachi: DVD-ROM reads DVD-RAM

Hitachi has released a fifth generation DVD-ROM drive, which is not only faster than previous models but aims for the goal of universal media compatibility.

The Hitachi GD-5000 is an internal, half-height DVD-ROM device which offers an 8X maximum DVD-ROM read speed and up to 40X CD-ROM reading rate.

The drive is able to read DVD-RAM disks recorded on other drives. The GD-5000 can achieve data transfer rates of 1.385Mbps and 250 millisecond access times when reading DVD-RAM media, according to Hitachi. The device supports a large look ahead buffer and high data rates via ultra DMA, and is priced at $279.

However, the GD-5000 drive will only support Type II DVD-RAM discs which can be placed "bare" in the drive, and not the earlier Type I variety which has to remain within a protective cartridge. Type I media can be double-sided, with capacity up to 5.2GB, but the GD-5000 will be restricted to the single-sided 2.6GB Type II discs.

Hitachi has also released a new DVD-RAM drive which can take 5.2GB Type I discs, called the GF-1050, but this drive is much higher in price, starting at $1929.
