Keeping a close watch on data

Independent business continuity provider Perpetua has released eVigil, an off site automatic backup service aimed at sole traders, SOHO and mid-range businesses as well as laptop users.

For $95 per month, businesses can have their data backed up daily and stored in a secure facility via an Internet connection.

"Off site storage at a secure Perpetua site has the added advantage that your stored data does not share the same risk as your primary site. Even the backed up data is backed up again daily," said Tim Mahony, Perpetua managing director.

Users schedule a back-up time and the software dials into the service via the Web. The user chooses the files, folders and applications that will be backed up.

Security is provided by end-to-end encryption, which protects the data from all but the person with the PIN number who established the backup.

Users send encrypted data to the server and each user has their own unique key.

In addition, eVigil uses file compression to minimise the transmission time and also uses data file management so that only file changes are backed up.
