Microsoft Acquires Multimap

December 13, 2007: Microsoft has announced the acquisition of the United Kingdom based online mapping company, Multimap for $US 50 Million ($AU 56 Million)

Multimap offers maps of Europe and the USA, along with door-to-door travel information and weather updates. The mapping services the company offer allows for proximity searching, routing, aerial images and local information.

The mapping company made their way onto the Top 100 technology company list as well as bringing in more then 160 million page views per month and more then 29 million unique visitors per year.

Microsoft hopes the acquisition will compliment its existing offerings such as Virtual Earth and Windows Live and be smoothly integrated into their portfolio.

“This acquisition will play a significant role in the future growth of our search business and presents a huge opportunity to expand our platform business beyond the U.K. and globally. We are thrilled to welcome Multimap onboard.” Said Sharon Baylay, general manager, Online Services at Microsoft.

The deal will also enable the software giant to leverage Multimaps world famous brand image, as well as benefit from its massive monthly page view count.
