Onara Updates Virtualisation Offerings

By Greg McNevin

December 20, 2007: Virtualisation specialist Onaro has rolled out a range of new products aimed squarely at data centre storage automation, claiming it can help virtualised data centres further integrate storage with IT operations.

The company says that new and updated products in its SANscreen family are designed to meet new server and storage virtualisation challenges by providing end-to-end service visibility for both physical and virtual servers across both SAN and NAS networked storage environments.

Onaro claims that while server and storage virtualisation is being deployed to reduce costs, each adds management challenges for data centre teams. Server virtualisation for example requires cross domain optimisation of both the server and storage environment, while storage virtualisation needs additional end-to-end visibility from the application to back-end storage devices to aid capacity planning and ensure application availability.

“The virtualised data centre requires a different approach to infrastructure management that emphasises a cross domain, service level view of the environment,” says Dave Russell, vice president of research, Gartner. “To maximise the return while minimising the risks of large scale deployment of virtualisation technology, all infrastructure teams – storage and server – need to work off a common service view of the supporting infrastructure. Only by adopting this common view can organisations advance to the next level of operational efficiency and cost cutting.”

In order to deliver on these new challenges, Onaro has introduced enhancements to its Service Insight, along with new NAS Insight, VM Insight, and a new Array Performance Module for Application Insight.

It claims that by using these new products to integrate NAS and SAN into the balance of IT operations it can lower capital cost for server virtualisation projects by 20 percent or more, and by 50 percent in application outage risk.

In addition to this, Onaro says its solutions enable organisations to more effectively integrate networked storage into IT operations, reducing application provisioning times, improving cross domain trouble shooting and supporting broader ITSM initiatives.
