Rename spearheads server push

Compaq has unveiled a new generation of its ProLiant Servers and NeoServers, that will introduce new technology and a simpler naming structure for customers.

The ProLiant family, which has been developed to meet the needs of a 24/7 business environment, has been divided into two groups to accommodate customer needs and simplify the selection for users.

The DL line is designed for server farm or rack mounted storage, while the ML series consist of tower-style models.

Compaq's ProLiant servers provide rack-mounted (left) or tower storage.

Compaq has introduced four new ProLiant models as part of this realignment. The DL380 handles small database and Web front end storage in a server farm, and the ML350 and ML370 which provide two-way performance for similarly smaller storage requirements.

The DL530, the latest addition to ProLiant series' middle tier, caters for storage requirements of larger databases, Web applications and redundancy.

All of the new servers have 600MHz or 733MHz Intel Pentium III processors.

The third ProLiant tier, the 700 series, handles very large databases, server consolidation, and multiple applications.

Compaq also intends to add a new server to its ProLiant DL line, a 1U two-way server optimised for multi-server environments such as those in Internet Service Provider or Application Service Provider farms.

The company will also offer its Insight Manager XE on all ProLiant servers to deliver a non-disruptive way of building and managing an intranet, as well as Remote Insight Lights Out Edition, which offers remote management capabilities through a browser.

The ProLiant series also includes a hot plug redundant power supply option, offering replaceable drives that can be removed and inserted without needing to bring the server down first.

SME SOLUTION

Compaq has also released the NeoServer 150 Internet Plus, an out-of-the-box solution that provides the infrastructure for small business applications such as file sharing, automatic data backup, intranet and Internet access and email.

The server contains a 500MHz Intel Celeron processor, 26GB network storage, DSL or cable modem support and optional uninterruptable power suuply.

The NeoServer is priced from $2999.
