WD Releases NAS for SMBs

October 3, 2008: Western Digital has rolled out a new, high-capacity network attached storage (NAS) solution aimed squarely at small offices.

Dubbed the WD ShareSpace, the 4-bay storage system features a Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) interface and provides up to 4 TB of storage capacity and multiple RAID configurations.

It represents WD's first foray into the small-office network storage market, and it plans to bring the sector a new class of ease-of-use and design along the lines of its WD My Book devices.

WD says that centralised storage helps businesses improve collaboration, while protecting their digital assets, and wants to bring the kind of storage larger businesses enjoy to small players and eliminate the cumbersome methods for sharing data (such as sending large files via e-mail or by sharing thumb drives) smaller offices and workgroups usually employ.

The solution also comes bundled with WD’s Anywhere Backup software for automatic backups, enabling multiple users to specify specific files, folders or drives for regular archiving.

“With the WD ShareSpace storage system, small offices and home network users can experience the same centralised storage and data protection often found only in big corporate data centres,” says Jim Welsh, vice president and general manager of WD's branded products and consumer electronics groups. “The set-up process is a breeze, so you can be up and running in a matter of minutes. This WD ShareSpace system offers big-time storage without the need for a big-time IT department.”
