Netapp picks up Data Domain

May 22, 2009:The $US1.5B acquisition of Data Domain has been announced by storage giant NetApp, continuing the vendor's push to accelerate the adoption of disk-based backup in multi-vendor environments.

NetApp intends to operate Data Domain as a product line within NetApp’s product operations organization, although the two companie's sales operations will be merged.

NetApp has reported a drop in fiscal fourth-quarter profit as revenue declined amid the global financial crisis.

Gartner analyst Dave Russell told Bloomberg “It is a new, additional opportunity at a time when they’re revenue challenged. It also keeps a weapon out of the hands of a competitor.”
