Codenomicon Builds Security Into SANs

March 27, 2007: Storage security specialist Codenomicon has just released a new filesystem & storage security system that it says puts NAS and SAN security as a primary concern alongside capacity and performance.

Called DEFENSICS Filesystems & Storage, Codenomicon’s solution secures networked storage systems as they are increasingly opened up to external networks.

The company says that while NAS and SANs have traditionally been “isolated islands” in data centres, recent trends have seen them increasingly be exposed to external networks in the name of better resource utilisation and de-centralised access.

It also notes that many storage systems were originally designed for high capacity and performance, with security an afterthought. It points out that over the past few years, several high-profile vulnerabilities have been publicly reported for protocols like CIFS/SMB, iSCSI, RPC and NFS - the basic building blocks of networked storage systems.

Codenomicon claims DEFENSICS Filesystems & Storage tools halt these threats and to help build a complete, proactive security solution.

"The release of DEFENSICS Filesystems & Storage solution enables organisations to defend against yet another attack vector in converging network environments that are increasingly open and vulnerable," says Ari Takanen, Chief Technology Officer at Codenomicon. "Together with our existing solutions to defend against IP-based, digital media and wireless attacks, this release further strengthens Codenomicon's position as the leading one-stop shop for proactive security that helps organisations stay ahead of the public threats."

The company says its tools can be used by vendors to ensure the robustness of their appliances against both previously known and zero-day vulnerabilities in CIFS/SMB, iSCSI, RPC and NFS protocols early in the software development lifecycle.
