IBM Intros Next Gen Storage Virtualisation

June 13, 2008: IBM has announced what it has dubbed as the next-generation of storage virtualisation software, claiming it can help more efficient management and consolidation of volumes of business data.

Part of its "Project Big Green" offerings, System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC) 4.3 was designed to improve utilisation rates, energy efficiency, availability, and scalability of critical applications.

IBM says the software can significantly improve the flexibility and responsiveness of IT infrastructure by creating consolidated, virtual pools of information across the enterprise. It says this enables IT departments to respond more quickly to client needs and centrally manage resources while reducing the need for additional physical storage hardware.

“IBM is dedicated to helping its clients improve their information infrastructures through powerful virtualisation technology,” said Barry Rudolph, Vice President, Storage Stack Solutions, IBM. “We have been the leader in storage virtualisation since SVC was introduced five years ago, and this latest version from IBM further showcases our innovation and represents our commitment to clients to incorporate green, efficient technologies into our storage portfolio.”

With the volume of data that clients have to store growing exponentially, IBM says that keeping control of storage costs and improving utilisation is becoming increasingly important. Virtualisation is emerging as a key way of doing this, while simultaneously reducing environmental impacts.
