January 10, 2006: Determined to get a slice of the home media centre pie, digital audio and video semiconductor developer Micronas/WISchip International has announced a new partnership with streaming multimedia provider Digital 5.
The two will be combing their technologies to offer electronics design manufacturers (ODMs) and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) a complete server platform design for recording, storage and distribution of digital media in the home.
This puts the two in the running with companies such as Sony, Apple and Microsoft who are all vying for the consumer dollar with new media centres like the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.
Micronas/WISchip will be contributing its Cypher 7108-based Network personal video recorder (PVR) hardware designs, while Digital 5 will chip in with its network attached storage (NAS) server middleware.
Its interesting to see NAS filter down to the consumer level considering the battle is still raging on the enterprise level.
