Wireless check-in for flights between Sydney and Byron

Jul 15, 2005: Jetstar has launched a new service between Sydney and Ballina Byron with the trial of a wireless broadband services that includes the delivery of customer check in from inside a briefcase.

The 16th destination provided by Jetstar will see the Qantas Group deliver almost 2500 weekly seats, and the cost currently starts from $69 one way on its website.

It launched its Ballina Byron operations by trailing wireless broadband for the first time on its airline operations, including customer check in, which Jetstar believes has the potential to deliver a new low cost technology option for the carrier's future regional airport arrangements.

Alan Joyce, Jetstar's chief executive, said that trailing the use of EVDO broadband wireless, built on the Telstra CDMA network, would deliver cost savings for Jeststar up to two-thirds the standard cost for IT at new airport set-ups like Ballina Byron.

"The technology is not only highly mobile infrastructure, but allows for faster airport set-ups at a lower cost.

"This innovation and last year's launch of Jet SMS mobile phone booking technology, underlines Jetstar's willingness to openly adopt the latest technologies that deliver internal cost savings and new customer benefits that help us maintain lower air fares."

Jetstar has a vision that many airports in its network will eventually use the technology in the future.
