Virtualisation to Keep Industry on Toes Until 2012

By Greg McNevin

April 10, 2008: It’s already taking the industry by storm, but according to the analysts at Gartner virtualisation will still be hot through 2012.

Gartner says that the technology will be the highest-impact trend in infrastructure and operations market through 2012, changing transforming how IT is managed, what is bought, how it is deployed, how companies plan and how they are charged.

“Virtualisation is hardly a new concept; storage has already been virtualised - albeit primarily within the scope of individual vendor architectures - and networking is also virtualised,” says Philip Dawson, Gartner vice president.

“However, as both server and PC virtualisation become more pervasive, traditional IT infrastructure orthodoxy is being challenged and is changing the way business works with IT.”

As a result of its popularity the firm says virtualisation is creating a new wave of competition among infrastructure vendors that will result in considerable market disruption and consolidation over the next few years.
