Sun offers NAS storage for first time

Sun Microsystems has teamed up with NAS maker Procom Technology to licence network-attached storage systems for the first time in its history.

Sun's focus in the past has been purely on storage area networks (SANs), which deliver better performance and capacity than NAS technology, but suffer from slow file sharing functionality.

However, new software has improved the performance of NAS systems recently and also sharpened up the file sharing ability of SANs.

Sun has signed this deal at a crucial time when Gartner has predicted a rise in the NAS market worldwide, between 2002 to 2007. NAS revenue is expected to increase at a rate of 16.7 percent to U.S.$3 billion, within this time frame.

Gartner predicts that SAN storage, in comparison, will rise by 11.3 percent and will hit U.S.10.3 billion in revenue by 2007.

A spokesperson for Sun said that they are poised to cease upon this growing need for NAS storage systems.

Alex Razmjoo, Procom's CEO outlined how pleased he is with this new partnership. "Sun Microsystems is one of the true innovators in the IT industry, and their licensing decision validates the strength of our technology and our engineering team. Procom is committed to developing OEM partnerships, and few companies can match the industry reputation and global presence of Sun Microsystems."
