EMC creates better visibility for McData storage
EMC is planning to develop software for McData's intelligent switch platform which will make it easier to locate data, analyse what kind of data is stored and how much capacity is left in each area of a SAN.
McData is aiming to provide a fabric-based storage platform made up of a hardware engine with an open Application Program Interfaces (APIs) and software developer's kit (SDK) attached to EMC's storage virtualisation and data movement applications.
Mark Lewis, the EMC executive vice president of open software said. "EMC is focused on developing and placing intelligence throughout the information infrastructure, wherever it makes most sense for customers. To support this goal, EMC will develop fabric-based software for McData's Intelligent Switch Platform.
"Through efforts like this. EMC will deliver open, network-resident applications that allow customers to extend the value of their existing networked storage environments."
Fabric-based storage virtualisation carries the advantage of simplifying the management of a storage network by isolating physical descriptions of storage, server and network functionality and replacing it with logical designators.
These logical designators are useful for identifying the details about storage capacity, location and types of storage presented in an easy to use, non-restrictive manner. This helps to make storage provision tasks more convenient and it also improves the overall use of storage area networks (SANs).
EMC believes that this increase in flexibility will reduce storage network management requirements and will improve the total cost of ownership for businesses.
In addition, it will also sharpen data mobility and dynamic routing.
