EMC targets midtier storage market

EMC is planning to win most of the territory in the medium-sized business storage market by selling its Clariion CX products with the same special features design for enterprises, for as little as $5,000.

EMC has traditionally targeted its storage systems at the high-end market, but over the last few years, it has scaled down its enterprise products in Australia to meet the growing needs amongst medium sized businesses.

The enterprise functionality, which is now available to the midtier market includes replication, disaster recovery, remote management facilities and "no single points failure" availability.

The no single points failure functionality allows backup be done on the fly, without the risk of the systems being shutdown. Remote management allows information to be managed in different areas from one location, without the need for skilled people to be scattered in different places.

Mark Heers, product marketing manager for Australia and New Zealand, said that this expansion into the midtier space was a natural evolution for EMC. "Over the last years, there has become a growing need for medium sized businesses to have their data managed 24/7, so it is only natural now that they need to have enterprise standard hardware. There is more of a need for robust, reliable technology in this market area, and that's why we are seeing a growing interest in these companies looking to us for that level of quality.

"We have continued to grow in many areas, thanks to our partnership with Dell, and we have also attracted more customers through word of mouth about the success of our products. Over the last year, we have welcomed 130 new customers to the Clariion CX range. We have high expectations of covering a large portion of the midtier market because of the cheap price and quality of our products."

EMC will be going head on HP and IBM, as they attempt to win most of the territory in the medium sized business market.

The most basic version of the CX200 costs around $10,000, but they expect to release even cheaper products later in the year.
