Sun shuffles storage pack

Sun Microsystems' network storage division is to get an injection of new blood as it looks to arrest its decline in market share for disk storage systems.

The division, which will remain under the leadership of Sun's Executive Vice President Mark Canepa, is to welcome Fidelma Russo into the role of Vice President of Quality Engineering. Russo was formally Vice President of Advanced Storage Systems Development at EMC.

Sun's storage division Chief Technology Officer, Balint Fleischer, has been promoted to Vice President, while Andy Ingram, who has had spells of leadership in the marketing divisions of Sun's software, processor and server groups, will take over from Kathleen Holmgren as Vice President of Marketing for the storage division. Holmgren is to take on the role of Vice President of Product Line Management.

According to research statistics from IDC, Sun's share in the worldwide disk storage market in Q2 of this year fell to 7.7 percent, down from 8.4 percent in Q2 of 2002. Over the same period, all of its main competitors, including IBM, Dell, Hitachi, HP and Network Appliance all gained market share, indicating that some work needs to be done by the new incumbents.
