Twin partner moves from Brocade

Storage networking vendor Brocade and host bus adaptor (HBA) supplier Emulex have announced availability of unified management for HBAs and switches using the Fabric Device Management Interface (FDMI) and Emulex's HBAnyware.

FDMI is an industry standard fabric-based database that hosts management information related to fabric-connected devices, including HBAs, while Emulex's HBAnyware is a centralised HBA management suite incorporating driver-based technology to enable complete management of Emulex HBAs and upgrade firmware anwhere in a storage area network (SAN) from a single, remote console.

The two companies have also combined to establish a SAN security architecture that includes both HBAs and switches, providing a more secure fabric based on standards-based, policy-based authentication and encryption technologies.

"Our partnership with Brocade extends the end-to-end intelligence of SANs and enables customers to take advantage of leading-edge storage management functionality at the fabric level, while capturing critical information from the HBAs via Emulex's HBAnyware," says Mike Smith, executive vice president of worldwide marketing at Emulex.

Meanwhile, Brocade has also announced that its next-generation fabric operating system will be available worldwide through information storage vendor EMC.

Additionally, EMC is to offer the latest version of Brocade's Fabric Manager software to its global customer base. Fabric Manager 4.0 complements EMC's ControlCenter SAN Manager and enables customers to configure, monitor, provision and manage multiple Brocade switches and SANs from a single console.

"We developed the Brocade Fabric Operating Environment to enable IT administrators to protect their data and get the most out of their Brocade fabrics," said Jay Kidd, Brocade Vice President of Product Management.

"Brocade and EMC have a strong history of working together to empower customers to manage their storage environments as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible.  This is just one example of the way Brocade is expanding intelligence in the fabric to make it easier for our partners to offer advanced features to their customers."
