Tivoli gets new identity, resources

IBM has combined the technologies it picked up in its latest two acquisitions with internally-developed code to add several new products to the storage management line-up sold under its Tivoli subsidiary.

The main addition is the Tivoli Storage Resource Manager, which is intended to act as a "dashboard" for a storage administrator with graphical presentation of performance indicators such as capacity and availability.

The SRM product includes many features also found in applications from Trellisoft, which IBM acquired last month for the Tivoli brand. Both apps include more than 300 predefined reports for devices from multiple vendors, plus chargeback capabilities for attributing storage costs back to individual departments or users.

Tivoli also added two products from its recent acquisition of security software developer Access360: Identity Manager and Privacy Manager. Both applications help to automate the implementation of identity-based security networks, according to the company.

In addition, IBM announced another new application under the Tivoli banner, called the Storage Area Network Manager. The SAN Manager will be based on IBM's WebSphere servers, and includes automatic discovery of storage resources across a SAN.

Also, IBM released the TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Controller 3590 Model A60, which enables 2Gbps fibre connectivity. IBM claimed the controller would add 40 per cent to throughput on the Model A60 FICON hardware.
