Sun Releases Virtual Tape for SMBs

August 9, 2007: Sun has expanded its line of virtual tape libraries with its new StorageTek VTL Value System - the first VTL built on its Sun Fire X4500 server.

Aimed at SMBs and remote/back office operations, the VTL Value System features Sun’s Solaris OS and is optimised by the firms new ZFS file system.

Built on the company’s Sun Fire X4500 (code-named "Thumper,") single, integrated server, Sun boasts that the solution offers a dense footprint and packs a four-way x64 server with 24 terabytes of SATA disk storage.

Sun says that due to it being an all-in-one pre-configured system the VTL is easy for SMBs to deploy and integrate with existing backup solutions.

“Our customers are swimming in a sea of data - a company's most important asset - and need tape storage integration solutions that don't break the bank,” said Nigel Dessau, senior vice-president, Storage with Sun Microsystems, Inc. “The new Virtual Tape Library Value system is an economical answer, as it runs on the Solaris OS, delivers 24 terabytes of disk capacity and is available at a very affordable price-point.”

The VTL value system is currently priced at US$84,995 (AU$98,800).
