National Australia Bank has been removed from the signatory list of an OpenAI open letter on cyber defence, two days after it appeared as the only Australian organisation endorsing the document.
The letter, A call for collective action on cyber defense, was published on 27 August with 127 signatories. The list now carries 156 organisations with National Australia Bank the only one to have been removed.
Neither NAB or OpenAI responded to questions from IDM abut the reasons for removal.
Both were asked whether NAB signed the letter, whether the bank authorised the listing, who requested the removal and on what date. Neither answered by deadline.
The page has changed in other ways. The submission form now states that submissions are subject to approval, and that approved organisations will be listed by name only, without a logo. The 28 August version displayed supporter logos.
The letter argues that current security practice will not hold. It states that "AI-enabled cyber attacks will become far more widespread and sophisticated as models around the world become increasingly capable".
It calls on every organisation to treat cyber defence as an immediate leadership priority. It asks governments to fund cyber defence for essential services that lack the staff or budget to act.
Signatories include Google, Microsoft, Anthropic, Cisco, Palo Alto Networks, Mastercard and Visa. With NAB removed, no Australian-headquartered organisation appears. Atlassian, added after 28 August, was founded in Sydney and is domiciled in the United States.
