Symantec Reaches for Security 2.0

July 6, 2007: Symantec have reaffirmed their ‘Security 2.0 misssion with the release of Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0, labelling it their most ‘significant’ commitment to anti-virus protection in years.

According to Robert Pregnell, regional product marketing manager for end-point security solutions at Symantec, this latest release recognises the Symantec 2.0 vision that addresses the increasingly diverse interactions and networking between end-point users.

“Over the last few years we’ve seen these new ways for sharing information, expecially with PDA devices, the 3G network and broadband now commonly on phones,” he says. “This is the environment upon which we’ve launched this ‘Symantec 2.0’ vision and in recognition of this, we’re bring together and eco-sytem of products and parters to help customers confidently forge into these new spaces.”

Five security products are included in the Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0, with much of the technology coming off the back of a recent spate of Symantec acquisitions which have snapped up Sygate, Whole Security and Veritas in the last few years. Symantec claims to now be offering the first ‘single agent’ to combine antivirus, antispyware, desktop firewall, intrusion prevention and device control.

“This is one of the key takeaways from this announcement,” says Pregnell. “There are other vendors doing all these things today, but there is no one who can offer it as a single agent.

“The important thing is that each of these technologioes are absolute market leaders, best of breed, this really goes beyond the blurb and we’re stamping it as really strong technology.”

Symantec have also released their Network Access Control 11.0 as an optional module that comes integrated with the Symantec Endpoint Protection to assist users in evaluating the status of endpoints and provision appropriate network access controls.
