Go Go Quantum GoVault

By Greg McNevin

July 11, 2007: Quantum has unveiled a new disk-based data protection appliance that it reckons is perfectly suited to SMBs and branch offices.

The company pegs its new GoVault Data Protection Solution as a fast, simple and reliable all-in-one storage solution due to its ability to back up data rapidly to disk, while retaining the portability of tape.

The system has space for two removable hard disk cartridges that enable both on and off-site data protection. The cartridges are quite rugged, withstanding drops of up to a meter on hard surfaces, and if calamity fails to strike then they can provide up to a 10 years of shelf-life for archiving.

next to the hardware, the GoVault includes data de-duplication technology that Quantum claims can reduce the number of cartridges required by as much as 20:1 compared to tape and other hard disk backup systems.

As only changes to files are stored, backups can also be completed significantly faster with transfer speeds averaging 26-34 MB per second. Every backup is a full backup too, which eliminates the complexity often found in incremental backups.

With the importance of security being highlighted every time a tape or laptop goes missing, Quantum says it has also ensured GoVault has sufficient password protection and encryption securing the cartridges during transportation and storage.

Quantum is pitching the GoVault as an alternative to tape or optical storage solutions, and at US 10 cents per GB, it very well could be a contender for SMB and remote office data protection gigs.
