Dell Challenges IT Firms to Recycle More

By Greg McNevin

July 24, 2007: Dell is giving itself a big green pat on the back with the announcement that it is significantly ahead of its recycling schedule. Simultaneously it has renewed its challenge to other manufacturers to offer free recycling to consumers.

Dell’s goal is to recover 125 million kilograms worth of computer equipment for recycling and re-use via charities before 2009 and so far (for 2006) it has managed to collect 40,000 tonnes of unwanted IT equipment from its customers – an increase of 93 percent over 2005 and well ahead of schedule.

“Protecting the environment is too important an issue for one company to be leading alone,” said Dell Chairman and CEO Michael Dell. “Customers should not be forced into improper disposal due to a lack of environmentally responsible options. To that end, we are renewing our challenge to every computer manufacturer, regardless of size or location, to join us in offering a free, global consumer recycling program. It is the right thing for our customers and the earth we share.”

Dell claims that it is recycling more of its old equipment than any other manufacturer by past sales weight to date, a point that it is using to challenge computer manufacturers around the world to offer free recycling to consumers.
