Quantum Rolls Out Data De-duplication

June 27, 2007: Quantum has just released details of its new DXi7500, one part of an enterprise disk backup and replication family that it claims is the first disk-based backup solution to bring data de-duplication, remote replication and disk-to-tape creation to distributed sites, midrange environments, and primary data centres.

Quantum claims the DXi7500 is capable of consuming 240 TB of data at 8 TB/hour, and with its policy-based data de-duplication approach, the company says the DXi series was designed to “anchor a comprehensive strategy for linking backup, restore and disaster recovery protection across the distributed enterprise.”

DXi7500 is able to function as a secure core repository for centralising backup and disaster recovery from multiple distributed sites due to an integrated software layer first introduced in the 3500 and 5500 models.

Data de-duplication though, is the driving force behind the new appliances with Quantum saying the technology helps users retain 10 to 50 times more backup data on fast recovery disk while using existing WANs to replicate backup between sites, making remote site management easier than ever before.

“The value propositions of data de-duplication are abundantly clear, and the technology is fast becoming a requisite for customers investing in disk-based backup solutions,” said Arun Taneja, founder and consulting analyst for Taneja Group.

“Just when the debate between in-line and post-processing was getting interesting, Quantum introduces the DXi7500, a data de-duplication product that allows the user to choose the method based on policy – once again letting the customer call the shots. I think the IT industry will love this flexibility.”
